How to copy Component monitors that exist in one template to another custom template

Hi,

I am trying to figure out a way to copy one of the component monitor, that exist in one of the template to another custom template which has been created manually. The component monitor that I am trying to copy is a Windows PowerShell monitor. What I need is a way to copy the powershell script monitor that already exist in another template. Is there a direct way for that? Do I need to manually Add the Component Monitor, by copying the PowerShell script from the other template that already exist? There should be an easy way I guess. I am not able to figure that out.

Thanks

Tom

Does anyone have any experience monitoring the Voltage Email Security application?

We have a need to do this and I was just wondering if anyone had anything to share on the subject before I get started.

SSL Expiration Monitoring

I'd really like to see an SSL expiration date monitor built-in that more realistic.  From what I have seen the current monitors out there are based simply on the node.  In practice, many people implement numerous SSL-based sites on a given host - distinguished by the host header.  I haven't seen how to configure an SSL monitor that allows you to configure the node as well as the host header.

SAM and Scheduled Tasks

Can SAM aggregate / monitor / alert on all scheduled tasks on all my servers?

I'd like some sort of view that shows all of the scheduled tasks in my environment and if they ran or failed etc.

Ideas?

HTTP Monitor "Request Head Only" Misleading

$

Not sure if anyone else has run into this issue, but I thought I'de post it on the forums.  We are currently on SAM v5.5 and are monitoring our web sites using the HTTP Monitor.  One of the configurable options for this component monitor is the "Head Request," in which your options are "Request Head Only" or "Full Request."  As we found out after some product detail pages were coming up as OOPs pages ( and confirmed by Orion Support ), "Request Head Only" does not actually request the HTML header.  If you set the component monitor to debugging mode and watch the logs it generates, it is looking for status codes.  If your webpage loads (200), the status is green.  The "Request Head Only" does not use the Search String criteria ( to my knowledge) at all.

If anyone is looking to perform a web site page check using these monitors, it is suggested to use the "Full Request" with a search string.

I felt that this was misleading and I hope this gets fixed in a future release.  "Request Head Only" should at the very least have the metadata from the HTML header in the request.  Hopefully this can help someone else before they run into issues.  ,

Hello

I can monitor the Mail server status and the status of the Exchange services, but it is possible to monitor the Mailbox Stores?

Thank you

would be nice to have a feature to launch RDP session from within Administrative Links.  I've looked around for documentation on how to create/add Administrative Link but cannot find anything.  An easy way to launch an RDP session from the SAM > Server Node Details view would be really handy.  thanks.

Having issues with Component Level Alert....

Hello!

I'm doing something pretty basic... I'm using SAM to monitor Apache and My SQL connections (with default templates).  I want to alert when the values pass a threshold.  Heres what I'm using so far:

alert.JPGalerta

and I'm getting:

SERVERNAME is showing a value of 21736636 on monitor Kilobytes Received

when testing the alert.. POA MySQL Server is the name of the template, busyworkers is pretty obvious...  how is it getting LAN statistics?

Thanks in advance!!

Managing the Management Tools

Networks have certainly grown in complexity in the last few years, as have the tools that manage them. Between the explosive growth of wireless networking and the sophistication of topologies and applications associated with the the LAN, gone are the days of simple up/down monitoring and copying device configs off to a TFTP server.

Management tools themselves can become bottomless pits for wasting man-hours if poorly designed or not matched well to a given environment. Frequently, the same people using the tools are those responsible for their upkeep, and time spent debugging a glitchy, complicated management or monitoring framework can detract from the primary mission of running and evolving a good network.

Its important to choose your tools wisely. Make sure you query similar environments for what they use (and how) before you purchase, and don’t believe for a minute that you are stuck with only mbasswhatever a network vendor provides for system management. And by all means, recognize that the care and feeding of management tools needs reasonable time and talent allotted in your scheduling forecasts and contributes to the total TCO of the tools that you buy.

How to stitch together "detatched resources" from different pages to form a view?

I need a scheduled report for Top 10 Netflow Conversations from each critical link. But I figured the way to do it would be to create a custom view and schedule a report to send the web page. Views can contain HTML code, but that doesn't allow me to include detatched resources from other pages (the page you arrive at, after clicking on the title of a section) such as this:

http://Solarwinds/Orion/DetachResource.aspx?ResourceID=328&NetObject=NI:3064

Anybody got ideas how to do it? Iframes? I thought they were out of fashion long time ago.

Are roll-your-own distributed storage systems a good idea?

$

As projects like OpenStack progress we’re starting to see more scale-out filesystems, like Ceph and Gluster, providing inexpensive storage services for "the cloud." For these, you take commodity compute hardware, pack it full of disk, and turn it into a managed storage system. These have certain advantages, they've very custom, they tend to be less expensive, and performance often scales with growth of the storage cluster. They have definite disadvantages, too, like being complex, having little support (though each of those examples has support that can be purchased), only having a CLI, and often running on operating systems that aren't as well understood in the enterprise (Linux).

Contrast that with the traditional array, monolithic but single point of management, fewer controllers but larger, purpose-built software to drive the array. Performance often gets worse as the array gets larger and there is more traffic on the internal links, but management interfaces are standard. There's always support from vendors, and training, and almost always a GUI for management.

Do distributed storage systems of the roll-your-own variety really save that much money? Do their advocates ignore the realities of staff time spent managing them? From your point of view which one is better?

Problem with Windows shortcuts

I am testing a few FTP servers, before I buy, and I encountered an issue that is presumably only affecting Serv-U.

I'm using a program (SyncBackPro) to sync files on a server with files on a laptop via FTP. There are some Windows shortcuts in the directories that are to be synced. The problem is Serv-U does not appear to be providing any size or time/date info for the shortcuts so SyncBackPro thinks they do not exist on the server even though they do. As a result, SyncBackPro wants to copy the shortcuts from the laptop to the server, even though they already exist on the server, and also copy the executable files, that the shortcuts point to, to the laptop.

I have already tried adding the 'Interpret Windows shortcuts and links' rule with a "no" value in the directory listings settings. This did not solve the problem. With this set to "no", SyncBackPro no longer wants to copy the executables to the laptop but it still wants to copy the shortcuts to the server.

Here's what happens with each sync with the rule set to a "no" value:

  1. First time a sync is run: Serv-U does not seem to serv a time/date or size for the shortcut on the server so SyncBackPro thinks it does not exist on the server so the file is copied to the server.
  2. Second time a sync is run: SyncBackPro deletes the shortcut on the laptop because it thinks it does not exist on the server.

As you can see, the result is the shortcut is ultimately deleted from both computers. This does not happen with any of the other FTP servers I've tested.

I also tried adding the 'Treat Windows shortcuts as target in listings' rule with a "no" value but this did not seem to make any difference.

I really like Serv-U but this makes it unusable for me. Is there a way to fix this behavior?

Serv-U Web Client Pro not working with new Java

I'm running Serv-U Gold 12.  Purchased it and my last upgrade was to Serv-U Gold 12.

However, the web client Pro doesn't work.  The moment Java updates, it stops working.   Anyone else have this problem or have a solution?  It's impossible to tell my clients to "downgrade" to a previous version of Java.

How do you fix this issue?  My Serv-U is running on Windows Server 2003

Urgent, if anyone can help it's greatly appreciated.  Rhinosoft is pretty useless and there's no posts or FAQ's on the Web Client Pro.

Data Aggregation only 15 minutes for 1 day !?!?

$

Hey Guys,

I've been asked to provide a report on a QoS band usage for the previous week, however wen I go back, the data has been aggregated up to a full day in very short order.

I can see that in 3.10, you can select either a named time period, relative time period or absolute time period. The issue is that you can't select the data roll-up (i.e. 15 minutes, 1 hour, etc) when you select the data (or i'm missing it).

The data i'm looking for is the traffic for last week from Mon-Fri at a 15 minute intervals.

When I view:

- Today - I get it in 15 minute intervals

- Last 2 days - I get it in 1 hour intervals

- Last 3 days - I now get it in 1 day intervals

Grateful:

- Advice on how to do this (at 15 minutes) if i've missed the blindingly obvious

- Advice on how to retain it at 15 minute intervals for much longer, as 1 hour roll-ups after 1 day really isn't going to work in any capacity management sense

We don't use NetFlow into the system (only CBQOS) so pumping out the DB to get more granularity is no problems.

Database settings are:

- Keep uncompressed data for 60 minutes

- Keep compressed data for 33 days

- Delete expired flow data nightly (but have just changed to once every ten days)

Many thanks

Hello fellow Thwackers!

As we are deep in the throes of developing our next release we are looking out to the community for people who would like to help us test some early versions of our next release. What would make you a great candidate you might ask? Super good question, right now ideal candidates would be people who have sizable test environment’s that can push at least 30k flows p/s from 500+ interfaces. If you are interested but don't quite fit the ideal candidate don't fret! Please feel free to reply to this thread and I will be in contact with you. As an additional incentive (other than testing cool new tech and providing your personal feedback) we will be offering up some Thwack points redeemable in our store to the active participants.

Just reply below and I will reach out to contact you.

Thanks in advance for your help!

issue with manually adding an existing IP LSA

$

i create all my IP SLA  by cli on the router. this enables me to know exactly what is being done, as well as organize my IP SLA by a structered numbering schema

then add them into VNQM, via the manul add commands

when a partners( some site/location that i do not control) chnages some parameter , like an IP addr, i have to fix it on the rtr

i remove the IP sla command, edit it and then add it back

here comes the issue

in VNQM, the chnages are no longer reflected. for some reason it does not see the new/changed IP SLA, even though the SLA number is the same

so i delete the ip sla in VNQM and try to add the number again.

NO LUCK, vnqm tells me that it exists already??

why? i removed the specific ip lsa number

i have stop/start the service, no luck

i have restart the vnqm VM, no luck

the only work around is to create a new  ip la number, the down side, all history is lost

PLEASE fix this bug
